3.6.3. Production of tillers
Tillering starts 10 days after transplanting and reaches maximum 50-60 days after transplanting. The number of tillers produced and duration of the tillering period depend upon many factors, such as variety, spacing, nutrient availability, and temperature. After reaching the maximum, the weak tillers generally die and the number of tillers decreases and levels off.
