    3.6.5. Variety affects tillering

  Varieties differ in tillering capacity. Tillering capacity can be obtained by growing the rice plants far apart in rich soil. Most rice plants do not reach full tillering capacity, particulary if soils are poor or if rice plants are closely spaced. Rices of high tillering capacity can be planted at a wide range of spacings.
