  3.6.4. Productive and nonproductive tillers

A tiller which produces a panicle at the tip is called a " productive tiller ". A tiller which dies without producing a panicle is called a " nonproductive tiller ". Tillers formed during late growth stages are usually nonproductive. Either the tillers die or the panicles produced are too small and ripen late. Modern varieties have more tillers at flowering and lose fewer tillers. Mutual shading, comprtition among tillers, or lack of nutrients may cause tiller loss.
