3.4.3. Water regime
In irrigated lowland rice culture, The seedlings are raised at wet bed nursery. And most period of the nursery is flooded. In Korea, the seedlings are raised also at wet bed nursery. But the surface of the nersery is not flooded but almost saturated. The seedlings raised at almost saturated or upland nursery are shorter, stronger, smaller leaves, and more highly branched roots compared to those raised in flooded nursery. And the seedlings raised at the nursery without flooding contain more nitrogen and starch than the seedlings raised at flooded nursery. The seedlings raised at the nursery without flooding quickly recover when transplanted in the temperate zone like Korea. In the tropics, however temperatures are favorable for rice growth all year round. Under such conditions, seedling quality may not have much effect on grain yield.
