3.4.4. Temperature
In the first week of postgermination growth, seedling weight growth is very sensitive to temperature. The seedling grows rapidlly as temperature increases between 22˚C to 31˚C. Temperature influences seedling growth less after the first week. Temperature between 25˚C to 30˚C may be considered as optimum for seedling growth. Seedling growth may be reasonably good up to 35˚C, above which it declines sharply. Seedling may die above 40˚C. About 10˚C may be considered as critical minimum for elongation of both shoot and root. These critical temperatures may vary with variety, seed history, and cultural management. Plants grow faster at warm temperatures than at cool temperatures. Cool temperatures can cause leaves to yellow. Some seedlings may eventually die.
