 3.4.5. Light intensity

Rice plants produce food from light, water, and air. Less light means less food, which results in weak seedlings. Rice seedlings need bright light. Cloudy days have less light. Therefore the seedbed should be prepared away from shadows of trees and buildings. Less light can cause the leaf blades and sheaths to elongate. The taller rice plants are weaker and will lodge if their panicles become heavy with ripened grains. The taller and weak seedlings are easily injured by stresses which are diseases, insects, drought, stong wind, etc.
