1.2.  Rice, food for mankind

 

  Rice, wheat, maize are the three leading food crops in the world; together they directly supply more than 50% of all calories consumed by the entire human population. Rice provides the principal human food  for about half of the world population. Moreover there is importance of rice as daily diet for Asian people. Rice provides 21% of global human per capita energy and 15% of per capita protein. Rice also provides minerals, vitamins, and fiber. In many countries, rice is prepared in a sweetened form for snacks, desserts, or special foods for religious or ceremonial occasions. Alcoholic beverages made from rice are also found in many countries. Glutinous rice plays an important role in some  cultures. In Laos and northeast Thailland, glutinous rice is the staple food.
