제72강. 형용사, 부사의 비교급 기본용법

둘 중 어느 한쪽이 다른 쪽보다 더 하다라는 비교로 than을 사용한다.

 

1. 우등비교 / 열등비교

우등비교

- The Ghanaian are taller than the Korean (are). 가나사람들은 한국인보다 키가 크다.

- He is taller than I. 그는 나보다 키가 크다. than은 접속사, 전치사가 아님. 그래서 I를 쓰는 것임.

- I get up earlier than she gets up. 부사의 비교, 내가 더 일찍 일어난다.

열등비교

-  He is less tall than I. 문어적, 그는 나보다 키가 작다. 원급(tall)을 쓴다.

- He is not as/so tall as I. 구어적

- He spends less time at work than at play. 그는 노는 시간보다 일하는데 시간을 적게 쓴다.

- He spends more time at play than at work. 노는데 시간을 많이 쓴다. (박만상 고급영어)

- Cotton is less strong than nylon.

 

2. 구체적 비교

- He is 10cm taller than I. 그는 나보다 십 센티 더 크다.

- He is 10 years older than she is. He is 10 years older than her. 10살 더 먹었다.

 

3. 강조비교

- much, far, very much, still, even, a lot, a great deal, a little 등

- She is a little older than her husband. 그녀 남편 보다 조금 더 먹었다.

- I feel much better now. 지금 훨씬 기분 좋다. 부사비교

 

4. 라틴어 형용사 등 비교

- superior / inferior, exterior / interior, major / minor, senior / junior anterior / posterior, prior, prefer, preferable 등

- more의 의미가 단어에 이미 포함, than 대신 to를 사용.

- He arrived prior to my arrival. 나보다 먼저 도착했다.

- Are cultured pearls inferior to natural pearls? 양식 진주가 자연산 진주보다 못합니까?

 

5. 비교급 앞에 the를 붙이는 경우

점점 더

- The more man has, the more man wants. 더 많이 가지면 더 원한다.

- The stronger force is, the greater danger is. 더 힘이 세면 더 위험하다.

- 주어 동사가 생략된 꼴. The sooner, the better. The much, the better.

- The higher the tree, the harder the wind. 등

- 앞의 the는 뭐뭐 만큼이라는 관계부사이며, 뒤의 the는 그만큼 더라는 지시부사이다.

둘을 비교시

- He is the shorter of the two men. 그는 둘 중에 키가 작다.

- This is the newer of the two radios. 이것은 두 라디오 중에서 새것이다.

all / none the + 비교급 + for / because / since / when

- 강조하기 위해 the 앞에 all, so much를 붙이기도 한다.

- I like Tom all the better for his faults. 그런 결점 때문에 톰을 더 좋아 한다.

- She hated him all the more because for a lot years she'd loved him with all her heart. 그녀는 수십 년 동안 정성을 다해 그를 사랑했으므로, 더욱 그를 미워했다.

- I like her none the less because of her faults. 그녀의 결점 때문에 그녀를 덜 좋아하는 것은 아니다.
