2.7. Spikelet
A spikelet is a unit of the rice inflorescence borne on the pedicel which is morphologically a peduncle. It consists of two sterile lemmas, the rachilla, and the floret. The rachilla is the small axis between the rudimentary glumes and the fertile floret. The floret includes the lemma, palea, and the enclosed flower. The flower consists of six stamens and a pistil. The six stamens are composed of two-celled anthers borne on slender filaments. The pistil contains one ovule. Some anthers begin to open one day after the panicle comes out. When the spikelet opens, the anthers inside the spikelet will also open. Low temperature delays the opening of the anthers. The pollen comes out from the anthers. It must reach the stigma and unite with the egg inside the ovary before a grain can develop.
A grain is a ripened ovary together with the lemma and palea. A spikelet bears only one grain.
