2.6. Panicle
The major elements of a panicle are the base, axis, primary and secondary branches, pedicel, and spikelet. The panicle is borne on the uppermost internode of the culm. The extent to which the panicle and a portion of the uppermost internode extend beyond the flag leaf sheath determines the exsertion of the panicle. Varieties deffer in degree of exsertion and environmental conditions can modify the extent of exsertion. The panicle matures from the tip and towards the base. The main axis of the panicle is connected to the culm at the panicle base. The panicle has a racemose mode of branching. This means that each node on the main axis gives rise to the primery branches and each primery branche bears the secondary branches. The stalk supporting the spikelet on the panicle branches is called the pedicel.
