3.2.1. Vegetative phase

The vegetative phase may be subdivided into fore stages which are  germination, seedling, transplanting, and tillering stage. The length of vegetative phase deffers according to the varieties. The germination stage starts when the seed absorbs water and  starts to swell and the radicle or coleoptile emerges from the gemination. The seedling stage starts at seedling emergence. At this stage the seedling develops seminal and lateral roots. Transplanted seedlings undergo transplanting stage. This stage covers the period from uprooting of the seedling to full recovery following transplanting. Seeds sown directly in the field do not go through the transplanting and recovery stage. The tillering stage starts with appearance of the first tiller from the axillary bud in one of the lower nodes. The number of tillers produced and the duration of the tillering period depend upon some factors, such as variety, spacing, and temperature.
