Silicon effects in rice plant
○ Effects on normal growth of plants
- Promotes growth and strengthens culms & roots
- Favors early panicle formation
- Increases number of spikelets per panicle
- Increases percentage of matured grains
- Helps maintain erect leaves
○ Effects on water economy
- Silicon-free plant suffer from internal water stress
- Silicon supply is critical during panicle initiation
○ Effects on disease and insect resistance
- Thick cuticle- silica layer provides excellent barrier
against attacks of fungi, insects, and mites
- Silicon application diminishes unfavorable action of nitrogen
○ Effects on other nutrients
- Promote translocation of P in rice plant and
retention of excessive P taken up
- Makes soil P available to rice
