Functions and deficiency symptoms of nitrogen

 

○ Functions of nitrogen

  - Gives dark green appearance to plant parts

    as a component of chlorophyll

  - Promotes rapid growth or increased height and tiller number

  - Increases size and grains

  - Increases number of spikelets per panicle

  - Increases filled spikelets percentage in panicles

  - Increases protein content in the grains

 

○ Deficiency symptoms of nitrogen

  - Stunted plants with limited number of tillers

  - Narrow and short leaves which are erect and

     become yellowish green as they age

  - Old leaves become light straw colored and die
