  Rice is staple diet of half the world population, including countless millions in Asia who subsist almost entirely on rice. Actually, it can be said that rice means 'life itself' for most of the Asian people.

  Therefore, rice is closely bound up with the economy and well-being of Asia. For promoting the economic situation and well-being of Asia, rice cultivation technology should be more improved.

  This book is written for farmers and students in Baubau, Indonesia. However, it is hoped that the book will be also useful for people interested in rice farming in the tropics.

  First of all,  I express my profound gratitude to Drs. H. MZ. Amirul Tamim, M.Si., Mayor of Baubau city and the staffs for providing valuable administrative support and substantial assistance in the investigation activities into the rice farming situation of Baubau area.    

  Acknowledgement is due to Dr. Ryu, Hae-Yeong, the writer of this book, who is an agriculturist in Korea and Dr. Chun, Tai-Hyun, the translator of the book, who is a professor, Hankuk University of Foreign Studies and Mr. Abidin, the translator of the book, who is an English teacher of SMA 6 of Baubau, Indonesia.

  I truly hope that the cooperative relationship between Baubau city, Indonesia and Rural Development Administration, Republic of Korea will be further strengthened as well as the agricultural development of the city.
