1.1. Rice, life itself

Rice is vital to almost half of the world's populations. It is the most important food crop for hundreds of  millions of Asians, Africans, and Latin Americans living in the tropics and the temperate zone. Rice employs tens of millions in jobs they cannot without, and has an enormous impact on our environment. The importance of rice as a daily food is expressed in many countries. Some people in Indonesia believe that the rice grain has a soul like haman being. In Sri Lanka, astrologers are often consulted and prayers offered before rice is planted. In China, India, and Korea, people greet each other by saying, " Have you eaten your rice? ". Most of these beliefs and practices have changed over the years. But rice has remained truly 'life itself' for most of the Asian people.
