3.3.3. Air

The respiration is sharply accelerated with the start of water uptake in the seed ready for germination. In the seed with high activity and fast gemination rate, the respiration increases with the water absorption. And the oxygen consumption also increases. Germination requires high levels of O2 unless respiration associated with it is by fermentation. Most species respond best to the ambient composition of the air. Decreasing the O2 content below 20% usually decreases germination. Rice seeds can germinate anaerobically but not without the occurrence of abnormal seedlings. Germinating rice seeds need air to live. Water contains very little air. If the germinated seeds are covered too deeply with water, embryos will grow slowly, resulting in tall, weak shoots. Embryos will die in some cases if the water is too deep.
