2.3.1. The rice leaf
A typical rice leaf is composed of leaf sheath, leaf blade, collar, ligule, and a pair of auricles. A leaf sheath is the basal part of the leaf originating from a node. It encloses the internode above it and sometimes the leaf sheath and blades of the succeeding internode. The leaf blade has a midrib with large and small parallel veins on both sides of it.The collar is the joint between sheath and blade. The auricles refer to the pair of small ear-like appendages borne at the base of the blade. The ligule is a thin upright membraneous structure seated on the inside of the collar at its base. Rice plants generally have both auricles and ligule. A common grassy weeds found in most rice field normally has neither auricles nor ligule. This helps in differentiating between the rice and grassy weeds. Leaf blade differs in length, width, area, shape, color, angle, and pubescence depending on varieties.
