2.4.1.Three kinds of roots
There are three kinds of rice roots. They are seminal root or radicle, mesocotylar roots, and crown roots or adventitious roots in the roots system of rice plant. The seminal root is only one in case of rice. It functions in nutrient absorption in early stages after seed gemination. But its function is usually maintained up to around the 7-leaf stage. Therefore the seminal root functions throughout the nursery period. Normally mesocotylar roots do not grow from the mesocotyl in rice. But in case of extremely deep sowing directly on a well-drained paddy field, many mesocotylar roots may be observed. Crown roots develop from the lower node. Old roots and older parts of a root are brown and new roots and young parts of a root are white.
