제101강. 동명사의 관행적 표현 ( Idioms )

 

1. It is  no use / no good  doing, 뭐뭐 해도 소용없다. - It is no use persuading the man. 그 사람을 설득해 봐야 소용없다.

2. There is no doing, 불가능하다.

- There is no knowing what she want to. 그녀가 원하는 것을 알 수가 없다.

3. feel like doing, 뭐뭐 하고 싶다.

- I  feel like loving Judy. 나는 쥬디를 사랑하고 싶다.

4. how / what  about doing, 뭐뭐 하는 것이 어떠한가? - How about shopping with me now? 지금 나하고 쇼핑하는 것이 어떠한가? What do you say to shopping with me now? 같은 의미

5. go doing 뭐뭐 하러 가다.

- I went shopping last night. 지난밤에 쇼핑하러 갔다.

6. on doing 뭐뭐 하자마자.

- on seeing me in the room, she went out. 그 방에서 나를 보자마자, 그녀는 나갔다.

7. be worth doing = be worth while doing ( to do ) = be worth one's while doing ( to do ), 뭐뭐할 가치가 있다.

- The English grammar is worth studying. = It is worth while  studying ( to study) the  English grammar. =  The English grammar is worth one's while studying (to study). 영문법은 공부할 가치가 있다.

8. keep on doing = go on doing, 계속해서 뭐뭐 하다 .

- He kept on studying the English grammar. = He went on studying the English grammar. 그는 계속해서 영문법을 공부했다.

9. be busy doing, 뭐뭐 하는데 바쁘다.

- I am busy studying the English grammar. 영문법 공부하는데 바쁘다.

10. do the doing 뭐뭐 하다.

- I did the shopping already. 나는 이미 쇼핑을 했다.

- I'll do the cooking. You do the cleaning. 나는 요리를 할께. 너는 청소해.

11. do one's doing, 뭐뭐 하다.

- I never did my talking to the woman.나는 한 번도 그 여자에게 말을 하지 않았다.

12. do doing 뭐뭐 하다.

- I do cleaning and cooking. 나는 청소하고 요리하는 일을 하고 있어요.

13. look forward to doing, 뭐뭐를 기쁜 마음으로 기다리다.

- I am looking forward to seeing Miss Naa again. 나는 미스 Naa를 다시 만나기를 기다리고 있다. Miss Naa 는 아프리카 가나사람으로 본인의 공동연구자이다.

14. of one's own doing, 자신이 뭐뭐한.

- Dr. Ryu gave Mr. Benedictus a book of his own writing. 유 박사는 그 자신이 저술한 책을 베네딕투스 씨에게 주었다. 실제로 베네딕투 씨는 본인의 공동연구자 인데 본인이 저술한 책을 가나를 방문했을 당시, 한권 주었다.

15. be above doing, 뭐뭐 할 사람이 아니다.

- He is above cheating at an examination. 그는 컨닝할 사람이 아니다.

16. never/not do without doing, do 하면 반드시 doing 한다.

- I never see this souvenir without remembering her. 이 기념품을 볼 때마다, 그녀 생각이 난다.

17. make a point of doing, 꼭 뭐뭐를 한다.

- I make a point of going to church every Sunday. 나는 매 일요일에 성당에 미사 드리러 간다.

18. It goes without saying that A, A라는 것은 말할 것도 없이 당연하다.

- It goes without saying that we should use rice as main source of energy. 우리가 쌀을 주 에너지원으로 이용해야 하는 것은 말할 필요도 없이 당연한 것이다.

19. be on  the edge/the point/verge/brink  of doing, 막 뭐뭐하려는 순간이다.

- Dr. Ryu was on the edge of leaving Ghana. 유 박사는 가나를 막 떠나려는  순간이었다.

20. in doing, 뭐뭐 할때

- Be careful in swimming in the river. 그 강에서 수영할 때 주의하라.

21. B  prevent / keep  A from doing, A는 B 때문에 뭐뭐 못했다.

- The strong wind prevented us from taking a walk at the riverside.

우리들은 강한 바람 때문에 강변에서 산책을 하지 못했다.

22. far from doing, 전혀 뭐뭐 하지 않는다.

- She is far from being talkative.그녀는 전혀 수다스럽지 않아.

23. come / go  near doing, 하마터면 뭐뭐 할 뻔 했다.

- The dog came near being hit by a car. 그 개는 차에 치일 뻔했다.

24. by doing, 뭐뭐함에 의해서

- By studying the English grammar, you can master English language. 영문법을 공부함으로써, 영어를 마스터할 수 있다.

25. besides doing / in addition to doing , 뭐뭐 뿐만이 아니라

- Besides being intelligent, she is strong. 그녀는 총명할 뿐만이 아니라, 강인하다.

26. instead of, 뭐뭐 하는 대신에

- Instead of playing outside, the children like to sit in front of computer. 어린이들은 밖에서 노는 대신, 컴퓨터 앞에서 있기를 좋아한다.

27. spend / waste A doing, 뭐뭐 하는데 A를 소비하다.

- Dr. Ryu spends his energy studying the English grammar. 유 박사는 영문법 연구에 힘을 쏟고 있다.

28. be capable of doing, 뭐뭐 할 수 있다.

- Dr. Ryu is well capable of teaching the English grammar. 유 박사는 영문법을 잘 가르칠 수 있다.

29. devote oneself to doing, 뭐뭐에 열심이다.

- Dr. Ryu devotes himself to teaching the English grammar. 유 박사는 영문법을 가르치는데 열중하고 있다.

30. When it comes to doing, 뭐뭐에 관한한.

- When it comes to being diligent, she is number one. 부지런한 것에 관한한, 그녀가 최고다.

31. cannot  help/forbear/avoid/resist  doing, 하지 않을 수 없다.

- I can not help studying.나는 공부하지 않을 수 없다. 여기서 help는  피하다 는 말.

32. No smoking. No spitting. 등. 금연, 주차금지 등.

33. It looks like doing, 뭐뭐 처럼 보인다.

- It looks like snowing. 눈이 올 것 같다.

34. for the doing, 뭐뭐 하기 만 하면.

- Success is yours for the studying. 공부만 하면 성공은 너의 것이다.

35. have the doing of, 뭐뭐 할 힘을 가지다.

- I cannot believe that she really  had the bringing up of Judy  in her own hands. 그녀가 정말 쥬디를 혼자 키웠다는 것은 믿을 수 없다.

 

적지 않은 예문을 제시했다. 동명사를 받는 앞부분이 전치사와 같은 역할을 함을 기억 할 것. 즉, look forward to 는 전치사구로 , 다음에 부정사가 올 수 없고 동명사가 와야 한다. to가 있다고 해서 동사가 오면 않됨. 왜? 전치사의 목적어는 명사나 대명사 만 될 수 있으므로... 이것으로서 동명사 강의를 마치고자 한다.
